This video shows inside and outside of a World War 2 German bunker which is at Rocquaine Bay, Guernsey in the Channel Islands. This bunker is known as a 4.7cm Pak 36 (t) gun casemate bunker. It is one of many coastal defence bunkers which were built to stop enemy beach landings which never happened, the guns were only used for practice purposes.

Guernsey was the most fortified place in the whole of the Atlantik Wall. During World War 2 the Channel Islands were occupied for five years by Adolf Hitler's German Nazi forces. They bought in thousands of Organisation Todt slave workers which were forced to build this and hundreds of other fortifications around Guernsey and live in terrible conditions.

Guernsey was liberated on the 9th May 1945 and Liberation Day is celebrated every year on the 9th May.

This was filmed using my homemade bright camera lights because it is totally dark inside this German bunker.

  • @jethou1 Yes Colin and probably awkward to crane up as well. Though you could say why didn't they just cut it up with their gas torches? In the next bunker video from the same area there is 10" thick steel which was cut through with a gas torch!!!

  • @MrBooojangles I would guess that the shield was just too heavy to move especially from the beach when there were lots of lighter doors etc. to be had.

It's a shame that most of the bunkers in Jersey now seem to be blocked up.

  • @chtitaupe Thanks.

  • @KAOSRIFLE Thanks Rob. Yes I was surprised too, looked like the scrapmen cut away part of it's channel to get it out but did not take it. The other bunker which is the same nearby, still has it but it is toppled over, aparently the shield alone weighs 1 ton. I knew some bunkers here had that shaft arrangement but I didn't know what it was for and I wanted to find out what the underneath room (spent shell room) was for before I finished off the video.

  • I was very surprised to see that the 10cm shield was still in place as I was sure they would have robbed it out for scrap metal after the war like they did with the doors etc.

Good video Martin, your lights work fantastically.

I will have to get out the Bunker plan's I have and watch the videos and look at the plans at the same time.

  • Superbe visite et excellente vidéo !!!
