The official explanation, as Vid12 said, would be that the explosion was the result of using his turbo boost in an attempt to soften the impact.
Also, I remember that in another episode KITT was about to go off a similar cliff, and told Michael that he had a high chance of surviving the impact with the rocks below. If the "inferior production model" can survive that, so can KARR.
