PS3 YLOD Fix (Part 1 of 3)

I had the Yellow Light of Death on my PS3 and I fixed it myself. I saw videos on Youtube on the YLOD problem for PS3 and I thought, "Maybe I can fix this myself and call Sony and tell them my PS3 is fixed"...

This is no gimmick. The same problem that plagues the Xbox 360 is the same overheating issue my PS3 had. I fixed a 360 of my friends, and he was amazed at how you can do this yourself. And instead of sending in my PS3, I fixed it myself. Keep in mind, this was no easy task, I have the old 60 gig model PS3 and it was alot of small parts, just waiting to snap and make me QQ.

Amazingly in the end it all was perfect, played a movie and a game as well, and has been running since.

THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THIS WILL FIX EVERY PS3. YOU ARE DEALING WITH MICRO CHIPS THAT ARE EXTREMELY FRAGILE. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I am adding this so everyone has the right tools for the job:
Husky screw driving set with of STAR, MM, and SAE bits, cross (philips) small size screw driver, Heat gun (Husky set and Heat Gun found at my local Home Depot, small cross screw drivers found as a set of cross and flat at Radio Shack) and silver thermal paste or grease for the CPU and GPU. (99% silver works best as thermal grease) You are responsible to handle your ps3 with care.

fix the ylod & 2 weeks later it happen again. now its say its too hot and turn it off but i did for 12 hrs and its still saying the same thing. stay on for about 5 min and the infor about its being to hot and it shut off, back to the YLOD. is my ps3 gone? what do i need to do? please help. thanks

@kongo7896 - Did you use a heat gun on both sides of the motherboard? This helps the hairline cracked soldering to meld back together. Also, use an Arctic Silver thermal paste, or one that shows that it has silver on the package.

@gamelinx . thanks for the infor. yes i heat both side of the motherboard for about 30 sec each side & then the cpu & gpu for a good 2 to 4 min. u think my ps3 is gone. got the $ for the slim tho. do the slim be having the same problem as the old ps3? let me know.

@kongo7896 No problem. The new slim is not reported to have YLOD, yet. They make the system less hot, so that would keep it good.

@kongo7896 Depends on how many times you have tried to fix this. If you are still having trouble, you might wanna send it in. Did you heat gun both sides of your motherboard in the CPU/GPU area?

i fixed my ylod and i only got a green light and then i was told to reflow the rsx chip but know when i turn it on it goes green then blinking red and the fan speeds up....what should i do anyone

i think im about to get ylod...but im not sure because i was playing mw3 for two hours, and suddenly i heard three beeps and the red light was flashing,then it went to standby.

But an hour later it was working fine and nothing happened, some people say that it is supposed to shut down when it gets overheated and some say that it is the beginning of ylod!!!

Am i about to get ylod or is it just a minor problem...please send me a message or post a comment, PLEASE HELP ME!!

I got a ps3 slim and it is freezing and it shows artifacts like if it was the matrix on the screen the guys at the shop told me it was the video card.Can someone tell me what to do to fix I all ready had to fix the blue ray drive once and now this plz help thanks.
