I live in the US, which is still a democracy despite the ongoing efforts of men and women who sit in high places in both government and industry who despise democracy and wish to put in place a military dictatorship with quasi religious and nationalistic overtones. If the current recession had been more catastrophic we would have ended up very much like Haiti. A small wealthy minority controlling the entire government while the rest of the population lives in abject poverty.
