Exactly what I was thinking, lots of punks have this attitude. Even if you read lots of interviews of punk bands they will say things as far as "we suck" as to not take themselves so seriously.

i think she means that she's not a musician in a 'conventional' sense who learned an instrument and can play super-advanced bass solo's or something. she sees herself as an artist and sound/music as a medium for expression.

The younger people here might not realize how completely lame the mass American pop culture was (including music & fashion and lots of other things) in the 80s & parts of the 90s. It was before the Internet had become a transformative force in people's lives, & there were a lot of us who grew up during that time who were totally isolated from cool underground stuff. When Sonic Youth & Kim Gordon started reaching a larger audience, it was a breath of fresh air & probably saved people's lives!
