I learned this technique from going on summer schools held by the National Piping Centre and the Royal Scottish Pipe Bands Association in the past.

When hemping a joint, it is essential to compress the hemp every few turns, so that it remains firm and stable once inserted back into the stock.

Ideally though, you would start with plain, unwaxed hemp and use a resin block to give the first few turns of the hemp a bit of grip on the wood or acetyl, and then wax the remainder of the hemp yourself with beeswax.
