Thai King to Appear in Public on 82nd Birthday

Thailands revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej will appear in public on Saturday at Bangkoks Grand Palace, on his 82nd birthday.

The kings traditional birthday eve address has been postponed indefinitely. But, he will grant an audience to royal family members, cabinet ministers, top government officials and elected politicians in the Grand Palace.

This would be the kings third public appearance since he was admitted to hospital in September.

The kings health and extended hospitalization have raised concerns in largely Buddhist Thailand where many regard the king as semi-divine.

Thais steadily arrived in groups at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital throughout Monday to show reverence to the king and sign a get-well book. More than 1.2 million people have signed the get-well books since the king was admitted.

Speculation has grown in recent days he could be released from hospital this week to coincide with birthday celebrations.

The kings hospitalization is also causing concern in financial markets because he is seen as the sole unifying figure in a politically polarized country.

Uncertainty about his health sparked a steep fall in stock prices and the baht currency on October 14th and 15th. Markets recovered after the palace said the king's health was improving.
