Ambient air temps can reach 2000 degrees in an airliner fire, enough to melt and burn the aluminum skin and wing box, so the firefighters didn't do so bad.
Stewardess in the US are trained to evacuate in 3 minutes, if possible.

At least one of the crash tenders (ARFF trucks) needs the boom with the piercing nozzle to puncture the skin of the plane and inject foam into the interior of the plane which would solve the continuing fire problem.
