Though electric cars still come with the other environmental costs of regular gas powered cars, like land paved over for parking lots & highways, along with promoting exurban sprawl.

We get blamed for not being able to drive 6000 miles on a charge!! Now, you're blaming us for exurbia!!! Can't win for losin. BTW, maybe highways, but NO URBAN RUNOFF of oil droplets, which pollute the Ocean.

I think what you are doing is very good, though I'm also thinking about the oil used to make asphalt. Don't get me wrong the automobile has it's rightful place in out transportation matrix, but we shouldn't over look walking, bicycles & mass transit. Our built enviroment can relate to our higher energy use too.

There's a whole diatribe about this! We need better design, to reduce transport and movement of goods (NO to unfair trade!) plus safe bike paths, walking, a lot more, lots and lots

EV and solar has one enemy that enemy is human greed.

The auto companies are simply stalling the production of EVs. They throw a bone by making prototype EVs for "demonstration" purposes, but available to no one, in order to fool the public and get government money for "research." They know that NiMH is the proven technology, but distract the public by making a big show of working on LiON, which will cost to the consumer more than twice as much with less than half the battery life on top of increased safety issues.

The patent issue is really phony; if any company wanted to fight for it, Chevron could not have stopped it. So Toyota wimped out, but no excuse. Moreover, on Bastille Day, Chevron was forced to sell to Bosch-Samsung, who are now suppressing it. Patents are not supposed to be used to suppress advances.

Relying on the Automakers to make Plug-in electric cars is folly. I advocate getting a bunch of green engineers together who can create a retro-fit kit for a common locally produced used car like a Chevy Cobalt and spawn a cottage industry of conversion shops. That way you can recycle cars, provide a business opportunity for progressive mechanics and increase EV popularity. It's not rocket science either. Everything is commercially available already. All it needs is packaging and fitting.

Transportation policy and energy policy have been intertwined for almost the past 100 years. The Los Angeles area once had a 1000 mile electrified railroad system "Pacific Electric". For that matter the light rail system in Calgary Canada get's its power from wind turbines.
