On Sunday, October 11, 2009, members of the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network-OSU/Central Ohio and other disability rights advocates protested Autism Speaks' Walk for Autism, held on the Ohio State campus. Nineteen individuals protested the organization's harmful advertising, unrepresentative leadership, and eugenic aims.

Photos taken by: Kristin Rorhbeck, Brenda Brueggemann, and Melanie Yergeau.

The two photos at the 53- and 58-second marks were photographed and posted to Flickr by a walker:

  • ASAN strongly opposes the torture of autistics and others with disabilities at JRC. On September 30, 2009, a joint statement was released by 29 disability groups -- including ASAN -- calling for federal legislation to shut down JRC and other abusive institutions. The statement is prominently posted on the national website of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network.

  • @JohnnyDart76 It doesn't matter what you have. You could be an Aspie or classical Autist too, pro-cure is still advocating for the genocide of a group of people. There's a difference between "treatment", helping people overcome their weaknesses (we do that for NTs but we don't try to eliminate NT in the process), and being for a "cure", supporting the elimination of an entire neurotype. My AS is a large part of who I am because it shapes how I think. Getting rid of it would be getting rid of me.

  • @J0ltC0la: "You could be an Aspie or classical Autist too, pro-cure is still advocating for the genocide of a group of people."

I'm sorry, but that's all bogus right there.............

Besides, if I asked for the cure of Tourette's Syndrome, would that be 'genocide'?

  • @J0ltC0la: WTF? Hey, I have an actual non-curable condition..............it's called Attention Deficit Disorder.

  • @JohnnyDart76 Yes, yes it is like you're advocating a Holocaust, or at least a genocide, of people whose brain just works differently than yours.

  • @headphasewp: Seriously man, come on. It's not like I'm advocating a Holocaust or something, sheesh.
