Abraham was the first Hebrew. The first Jews were the tribe that defended the other tribes in Y'Israel and were called Judah and eventually called Jew. People forget that it's a religion and NOT a people. The reason is there are Jews from many nations and they would say the same thing. Just because you are Hebrew does NOT make you a Jew. Hopefully I gave an understanding and NOT a so called racist remark.

@EitanFri Why the semantics? Today all Jews, no matter what tribe they were originally from, are called Jews. Hence Abraham is the father of the Jews. Technically there was not a Jewish nation when it was only he and Sarah but God made a covenant with him giving him and his descendants through Isaac and Jacob the Torah and the land of Israel. The people who are descended through this line are today known as the Jews.

The "jewish" nation weren't a nation back then. only when the son of Salomon split the kingdom to Jews and Israel (/rest of Israel)...
The Israeli nation started from the Jacob, which is grandson of abraham. (Jacob second name was Israel...)
So abraham was not israeli nor jewish... but he was one of the fathers of the nation.
