PLEASE READ THIS - Recently I have been corresponding with Clair Mills herself - a privilege to chat to such a lovely person . She has asked me to share this message with you all regarding the negative and dis-respectful comments this song often recieves -

" Sorry you have to read the awful posts about the song Clair..
I was a toddler !!!!!! Please feel free to tell them that from me .
He is also a very kind and lovely man who I adore still to this day and I would ask them kindly to refrain and respect our wishes "
- Clair Mills - December 2011

PLEASE NOTE - Clair is very fond of this video - it holds a lot of happy memories . She occasionally reads the comments on here . With that in mind , if you wish to leave her any nice personal messages I`m sure she would be delighted to read them . There will be no replies - Clair is a very private person - but the chances are she will read them . Any inappropriate or offensive comments to Clair WILL BE REMOVED BY ME so don`t waste your time !

About the song and video .....

Gilbert`s classic world-wide hit from 1972 . There are many videos of Gilbert performing this song - but none of them capture the spirit of the record . I thought it was time the song got the kind of video it deserves ! If you haven`t seen this footage before , it was filmed for promotional purposes when the single was released - but music videos weren`t commonly used back in 1972 !
It features Clair Mills herself - the daughter of his manager Gordon Mills for whom Gilbert used to baby-sit in the early days of their partnership . He wrote the song as a gift for her parents to say thanks for everything they had done for him . Hope you enjoy this video of Clair having fun with ` Uncle Ray `

Lyrics to Clair :

Clair, the moment I met you, I swear
I felt as if something, somewhere
Had happened to me, which I couldn't see
And then, the moment I met you, again
I knew in my heart that we were friends
It had to be so, it couldn't be no

But try as hard as I might do, I don't know why
You get to me in a way I can't describe
Words mean so little when you look up and smile
I don't care what people say
To me you're more than a child

Oh, Clair
Clair

Clair, if ever a moment so rare
Was captured for all to compare
That moment is you in all that you do
But why in spite of our age difference do I cry
Each time I leave you I feel I could die
Nothing means more to me than hearing you say
"I'm going to marry you
Will you marry me, Uncle Ray ? "

Oh, Clair
Clair

Clair, I've told you before "Don't you dare"
"Get back into bed"
"Can't you see that it's late"
"No you can't have a drink"
"Oh, alright then, but wait just a bit "

While I, in an effort to babysit, capture my breath
What there is left of it
You can be murder at this hour of the day
But in the morning this hour will seem a lifetime away
Oh Clair
Clair
Oh Clair

  • I loved this video and song when it first come out. I swore one day that if I ever had a daughter I would name her Clair. And I did....i have a daughter called Lindsey Clair Taylor (now 27). Thank you Gilbert and Clair Mills.

  • @nutgonetaylor To my knowledge there wasn`t an actual video at the time - I put this together from some rare footage of them filmed for promotional purposes . Remember they didn`t make pop videos back in 1972 - we just heard these songs on the radio and waited patiently for tv appearences on programmes like Top Of The Pops . We take pop videos for granted now , but it wasn`t always the case . I have two daughters myself - one of those is also a Lyndsay - but spelled differently !

  • I loved this video when it came out, and understand Gilbert used to occasionally babysit for Clair's parents (her Dad was Gilbert's manager at the time). This is a beautiful film which simply demonstrates his fondness of a gorgeous little girl before he was lucky enough to have a family of his own.

  • @shaz6160 All correct - read all the info under the video !

  • @mohawk3881 Ooops! So it does. I did think his manager's name was Gordon, but didn't put it just in case I was wrong - I believe he has passed away? My older sister was a huge fan so sharing a room I 'learnt' a lot of the lyrics off by heart, in fact would you believe as a birthday treat I'm taking her to see Gilbert at Brighton in April - he'd better sing 'Clair' lol! xXx

  • @shaz6160 I can assure you he will sing Clair - with this footage on a screen behind him . If you haven`t seen him before you are in for a treat - he`s just as good as ever - if not better ! If you join the queue after the show you will meet him - he always stays to meet EVERY fan ! Yes Clair`s dad is sadly no longer with us - but Clair definatley is and she will probably read your comment !!!!!!!!!

  • Anyone who has ill thoughts about the meaning of this song is just plain wrong. I smile and feel warm and happy whenever I hear it. The very end where she giggles is so real, I find it amazing that they were able to capture such an authentic laugh from Claire. (I believe I read that it was actually her on the record. Anyway, thanks to both Gilbert and Claire for this wonderful song. If only music today were still so innocent.....

  • Haven't you ever been in love with your children??? He just loved her, maybe he never had children of his own or whatever. It's possible to love someone in innocence you know, it doesn't have to be sordid. And you know kids can just melt you sometimes, then they become 'tweens and teens and you're like, where the hell did that kid go??? JK I love you Max, Monet, Esprit, and Elle xoxo

  • What does "flagged for spam" mean?

  • Songs like this serve to bring in to sharp focus how far we've come (in music and society.) I submit that we are not e-volving but rather, de-volving. These days, it seems that society elevates the lowest common denominator.

  • My name is Claire. My mum and dad were bringing me home from the hospital after I had just been born December 1973, They were still trying to decide on a name for me. This song came on the radio, and the rest is history.

  • what a great song i just love Gilbert a very sweet man!

  • I was named after this song. My mum and dad loved it, and so together, 14 yrs after it was released, they had me and named me Clair.... without the 'e' just like the song!! i hate it when people spell it wrong !

  • Love 'Clair'. Always did! In fact I don't think Gilbert O'Sullivan made a record I didn't like! A very talented singer/songwriter and what a very innocent, adorable video this is! Have just sent the link for this to an on-line friend who was, in fact, named after this record!

  • This was the wonderful days of innocence...and I loved this song as a teen and I love it still in my 50's. Thk u Gilbert O'Sullivan for a sweet and adorable song! Will always cherish it!

  • This song has an amazing driving beat. I remember this song when it first came out. That laugh at the end is always great to hear.

  • Beautiful song, beautiful little girl and an awesome video!
