Sorry. St. Jerome was only asked to translate the New Testament, not the Old Testament. The Old Testament translation was done on his own accord. He was not ASKED BY THE CHURCH TO DO IT>

Brilliant presentation, and very well researched! St Jerome's preference of the Jewish proto-Masoretic text over the Christian Septuagint was indeed an unauthorised, judaizing departure from the traditions of Holy Church. But worse was to come - the New Vulgate translation (promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1979) went a step further, taking the even more corrupt Masoretic Text itself as its textual "norm"! It also favours the protestant critical text of the NT over the Majority Text.

thanks for this video ... Most Scholars saw the LXX as inferior to the Hebrew Bible called the Masoretic Text (MT). With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, this all changed. Ancient Hebrew scrolls were found that follow the LXX, not the Masoretic Text. The DSS showed that the LXX had an underlying Hebrew Text that was different from the MT.

Jerome got duped by the Rabbi's of his day as they taught him Hebrew. Onkelos (Aquila) under Rabbi Akiba's guiding hand, created a new Greek Translation to replace the original Septuagint of 250BC. Our NT quotes the Older 250BC Septuagint, not the newer Aquila version. Did these Rabbi's change the scripture (MT)? No, they did something more subtle. They changed the Greek translation. Why? Because Paul and his successor were so potent at evangelizing the Synagogues.
