John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Portsmouth, OH 07/09/08
TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "Oil plants take a long time to build and we need more power in the future, whether it's clean coal or nuclear. But the process becomes very difficult: the licensing and you know that sort of thing. How can we speed up the process?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "First of all I would open our coastal areas—lift the federal ban on oil and gas exploration off of our coast. I think that we need to do that. Now that would take some time. "Ohio sits on a great deal of coal. It is very important that we develop this clean coal technology, which I think will have a very beneficial effect, creation of jobs, etc. And finally, again, about nuclear power [...] We can embark on it, we can do it now, we can achieve it now, and we can make plans for the future [...]"
"Who's bearing the burden? Low-income Americans who are driving the oldest automobiles. Those are the ones that are hurtin' when they pay $4 a gallon at the gas pump. [...]"
