The Shine Centre is a volunteer driven NGO, providing a literacy programme for second language learners in Grade 2 and 3. We are committed to empowering young children to read and transform through books. Our motto is Words can Change Worlds.
Established in 2000, The Shine Centre has developed a proven and innovative approach to mentoring second language learners. We provide early intervention and support to Grade Two and Three children who are experiencing difficulty in language and reading.

We provide a holistic programme which includes language enrichment, paired reading, phoneme (sound) awareness, creative writing and parent workshops. This is done in the energetic and lively environment of literacy hour which is facilitated by trained volunteers.
Volunteers also develop partnerships with Grade Three learners and become their learning partner. This is a way of giving children invaluable one-on-one focused attention.
Through parent workshops, Grade R and One class book clubs and our swap shop, we seek to enrol families into finding the joy of sharing books, learning about the world and generating sparks of possibilities.
