California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com checks out the surfing dogs at Imperial Beach in this episode of "California Travel Tips."

California surfing is revered around the world, from the big waves at Mavericks, to the rips of San Diego and curls of Newport Beach.

The history of surfing in California dates back to 1907, when Hawaiian surfer George Freeth arrived in Redondo Beach at the invitation of railroad magnate Henry Huntington. The Surfing USA culture was born.

Today, when the best California surfers just happen to be canine lovers, they bring their dogs along for the ride.

Every June, Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego hosts its annual surfing dog competition, which draws seabound hounds and thousands of adoring fans from around the nation.

The event takes place at Imperial Beach, a dog-friendly stretch of sand just about 5 miles north of Mexico. It's a dog-eat-dog competition, with only the best surfers taking home the prize. No dog paddling allowed!

Heats are divided up into three categories: Under 40 pounds, over 40 pounds and tandem surfing for dogs and their owners.

These hot dogs have three waves to impress the judges and are scored on confidence level, length of ride and, of course, a bit of moxy.

Want to get in on the action? Arrive before the competition and your dog can take surfing lessons with members of the Coronado Surf Academy.

The academy, in partnership with Loews Coronado Bay Resort, also offers dog surfing lessons at San Diego beaches throughout the year.

I'm Veronica Hill, and that's your California Travel Tip.

  • Poor dogs :(

  • @homervote4president Actually, I think they were really having fun.

  • I can tell too much focus on Southern California in California Travel Tips. What about Eureka, Sacramento, Tahoe, Yosemite, etc.???

  • @yeomanrycavalry We have Napa Valley, Mammoth Lakes, Alcatraz, Monterey, Golden Gate Bridge and other Northern destinations. This summer, we are hitting Yosemite and Tahoe.

  • Hawaii has better waves. Sorry, had to say that. :D

But it's also good to know that California has something for George Freeth since it seems, so far, that Hawaii has nothing, not even a little thing saying who he was and how he helped. Only the Duke has a statue. D:

  • Hi and thanks for commenting! The statue was stolen from Redondo last year and not sure if it was recovered again. Sad to hear Hawaii has nothing for Freeth.

Nah, Hawaii's waves in the winter are amazing. But in the summer there flat and not worth shit. And california consistently has waves... Hawaii's sick tho

  • cool

  • That sucks. D:

And although it's not all locals here, I'd say most only remember Duke Kahanamoku as being the father of surfing. Although it is both Duke and Freeth.

  • Very cute. It's a fun contest!
