  • Do you know the weight of the bike? We are getting our son a 12" for his third birthday, but even without training wheels, they are al sooooo heavy! The lightest one we could find was about 16 1/2 lbs without training wheels.

  • @SequoiaKai1 My son rode this bike all of 2009 (age 3), in 2010 he rode a HotRock 16 and in 2011 he rode both his HotRock 16 and a HotRock 20 (though a little big, he usually chose the 20.) The HotRock 12 is such a great bike, we decided to keep it so his kids could ride it someday. I took the scale up to the attic and weighed the bike for you. The HotRock 12 weighed in at exactly 14 pounds without training wheels. I believe the frame is all aluminum; likely the only 12" aluminum bike available.

  • i agree he needs helmet, and knee and elbow guards otherwise the vid was great. how much did u pay for it?

  • @farstarfilms Did you mean how much did we pay for the bike or the training handle? The bike is a Specialized Hotrock 12. It cost about $175 from a local bike shop. The training handle was purchased at Target for about $15.

He has a helmet and I think we had him wear it when we taught him how to ride (maybe a few weeks before the video was taken.) Bike helmets are really not very comfortable, convenient or cool (temperature.) While helmets may make riding a bike safer, it would also liekly

  • spoil some of the fun of hopping on your bike and going at a moments notice. I feel that requiring a helmet would cause him to ride less too; something we don't want to encourage.

Also, I'm not convinced how well a helmet works for a kid this size. Helmets don't tend to fit kids this age very well. It could certainly fly off if happened to be in some sort of serious accident. The helmet makes it a little bit harder to turn your head, hear and see.

  • The helmet also makes the bike a little more difficult to balance. Also, on this tiny bike he just didn't have very far to fall anyway.

  • This kid is great, but where's his helmet?

  • Don't listen to the helmet nazis. My boy was riding the same bike at 2 1/2 without training wheels.
