Who's Laughing, Who's Crying
performed by The Chalets
originally issued in 1961 as Tru-Lite 1001, first reissued in the winter 1962 as Dart 1026 (heard here), and, finally, as Musicnote 1115 in 1962
Personally, the early "doo wop" era is my favorite. By 1958, the black hallway groups had made way for the white "want-a-bes." Groups like Dion & The Belmonts and The Mystics were downright excellent, speaking of Excellents. They were great, too. Most, honestly, were merely just that - "want-a-bes" - four guys trying their damnest to impress a girl or just gain some street cred. Anyway, this is one that has grown on me over the years.
What we have is a trio backing on drums, guitar, and bass - primitive enough, a wonderful call-and-response acapella opener, and a plea that can't be denied! He just can't hide it anymore, crying inside for his love. This is the stuff street corner magic is made of.
Very very nice! Thanks!
