This is a video of me on the phone to Apple support. My Apple TV would make this really hectic screeching noise when it played the startup movie.

After speaking with the tech guy in the "specialist Apple TV team" I was doing much cable swapping and testing of different speaker configurations. It looks like the combination of my iPod hi-fi and a toslink (optical audio) cable chews up the intro. Connecting via regular electrical cables means that that sound can be heard fine!

Have not had a chance to do more as the guy that I was speaking to said that he would call me back.... I called him back in the end - the rebooting at the end was un-related to the sound issue at startup. That was becuase of a broken file in my iTunes...

What is it with me and Apple products, I am on my 3rd laptop, 3rd iPhone and just about every software update that I have gone for has been a disaster (Leopard, iPhone and now Apple TV)!!

Still broken, Apple going to test toslink cable with iPod hi-fi tomorrow and get back to me :0)

  • Hey, sorry for the late reply - the issue was as

askalet has noted - the Dolby 5.1 signal that Apple TV puts out on the startup video was what was causing the issue - that in combination with the TOSLINK cable - what you should do is go into the settings and turn off 5.1

This is only affected by movies that have been encoded with surround sound and not standard stereo videos

  • Version 2.0.2. is out for Apple TV. Even though I told Apple of this fault they have failed to fix it!!

  • Turns out that there is not that many people that are out there that have the same steup as me.

  • They really got it wrong again with this product!!!

  • Fuck Germany

  • I had the same problem, and in my case the issue was that dolby digital output was turned on in the apple tv settings, but my audio device (a stereo dac, not a dolby reciever) was expecting PCM output, so it played the surround signal as static. I'd bet that this poster's issue is similar.

  • my apple tv on 42" panasonic plasma doesn't always show up when i select the hdmi input/channel on the tv's remote. when i use to switch from watching sky av1 to the ATV 1.1 or my ps3 they both are detected instantly. now it just hangs, changing 720p, 1080i or 1800p in the settings hasn't helped. 1.1 software was just default settings.
