Thanks to everyone who has commented on this vid! As far as i know this video is semi-official, i got it free with the japanese issue of 'feel good lost', but have never seen the vid referred to in an official capacity by the band.

how does an artist make music like this? what kind of equipment/software would one need?

@edhusse some delay, distortion and loop pedals, possibly a sampler, a synth, couple o' guitars, a bass and pro tools. oh and don't forget a female violinist :D
