When photographer Glen McClure came to Virginia Museum of Fine Art's Derby College Night October 22, 2009, he spent a busy evening photographing students, faculty, and roller derby girls. This video contains highlights from the evening as well McClure discussing his
work on display at VMFA's Pauley Center through January 31, 2010. With their saturated colors and elaborate costumes, Roller Derby Girls simultaneously recall pop and advertising imagery as well as Renaissance portraiture of the 15th and 16th centuries.

  • Glen was right the first time. If this doesn't look like the Roller Derby you remember, it's because it isn't Roller Derby. Roller Derby and roller girls are something quite different. The roller girls have no connection whatsoever to the historical Roller Derby. The roller girls have their roots in the Austin Texas burlesque scene, so what you have here is really burlesque portraiture and not Roller Derby. Let's get in touch Glen and we'll arrange for REAL Roller Derby portraiture.
