(cont.) Personally, I find this the opposite of flat and mediocre. Sometimes the simplest of melodies is more wonderful to the ear than more complex works. This isn't to say that complexity in orchestral music is a bad thing, just that simplicity is sometimes more meaningful and memorable, especially to those who hear the music as part of a larger experience such as a video game.

Are you this fun at parties? Seriously though, I can understand why some who are well-versed in music theory, harmony and composition in general may have complaints about a piece, but the important thing to remember here is that the melodies are associated with memories for those of us who've played FFVI. Translating a primitive 16-bit theme into an orchestral arrangement is difficult without losing the essence of it. That aside, the memories associated with this theme are what make it powerful.

This is a main theme, though. For in game pieces, the repetition has to be interwoven with changes in texture, or it'll never stand out, nor guide the player through the mood of the stage. Matt Uelmen (of Diablo) points it in an extremely sensible way.

I've written and performed music professionally almost all my life, and I consider this pretty much the most ingenious melody I've ever heard. I'm embarrassed to hear that a musician managed not to hear the genius of a musical message stated so elegantly, efficiently, with no pompousness and snobbishness that plagues so much music. Nobuo Uematsu is passionate about music being a "universal language" but I suppose if you've fallen into music snobbery you might miss the communication.

You guys should never let one's opinion be the guide to yours. If one thinks it is flat and mediocre, that's what he thinks... It doesn't mean it is.

Even though he faved a lot of pop music videos. I don't know if he's really that qualified.

Hamaguchi is so hit or miss when it comes to orchestrated arrangements of Uematsu's pieces. Sometimes he's fantastic, sometimes he's borderline awful.

Meh, he offers nothing remotely concrete to support his view. All he's doing is dropping by to say "I dont like this and I am qualified to say so."

I don't think his opinion is quite valid, though. His suggestion that the theme is flat and mediocre and the subsequent comparison to "generic movie music" suggests that he fails to understand the piece in context. Video game music must be repetitive and simple by nature, because it is never meant to be the center-piece of any given scene, unlike the actual gameplay. Thus SGTBizarro is right in stating that the simple nature of this theme is it's greatest asset.
