"In his long-awaited masterwork, "Delusion of the Fury: A ritual of dream an delusion", he rises above all attempts at descriptive containment and becomes quite simple heroic. "Delusion of the Fury," proceeding from tragedy to comedy, is nothing less than the full, ritualistic expression, in vocal, instrumental and corporeal terms, of the reconciliation by the living both with death and with life. It is a total Partch statement, incorporating voices, mime, his celebrated instruments, dance, lighting and staging, all working to express this philosophical concept." -Eugene Paul

"STATEMENT : Words cannot proxy for the experience of knowing -- of seeing and hearing. The concept of this work inheres in the presence of the instruments on stage, the movements of musicians and chorus, the sounds they produce, the actuality of actors, of singers, of mimes, of lights; in fine, the actuality of truly integrated theater. These introductory pages consist largely of technical data. They contain no argument, no exposition. I feel that the only investigation that has genuine integrity is the seen and heard performance." -Harry Partch

  • The 43-tones are never really used in a pandiatonic manner, in the way that one thinks of highly chromatic music. Sung parts are generally pentatonic modes, which Partch tunes in a just-intoned manner by selecting those of the 43 tones that make for the most consonant intervals at a given time.

I saw the revival of this piece in NYC last year, and that chanting choir was done by untrained singers, along with the instrumentalists.

  • @edgarvarese12 varese was a genius. And i wholeheartedly agree with you.

  • @emilygclarinet Actually, its easier for vocals to do just intonation, more stable, i heard.

  • It must be difficult to learn to sing in a 43-tone tuning system.
