Are you interested in visiting Italy outside the confines of a tour group? Do you want to understand the ins and outs associated with driving, riding public transportation, arranging lodging, and ordering in restaurants before you go? Do you want to effectively communicate with Italians and be regarded as an informed visitor, not as an ignorant tourist?

I just reviewed Italy From The Inside by Francesca Tosolini, which I found to be unlike any other guide to Italy I had ever read. Where most guides to Italy tell you what to see and do, this guide tells you HOW to see and do things, from the perspective of a native Italian.

My name is Mike. My wife and I love to travel, and we visited Italy for our honeymoon. Like many of you, we prefer to experience countries as 'natives' rather than as detached tourists.

Italy From the Inside teaches all of the basics on how to use trains, planes, and automobiles, and how to handle matters associated with money, health, food, and understanding Italian culture. This guide includes a healthy dose of pictures and useful Italian words and phrases to help you communicate with Italians you meet. These tips will allow you to avoid common misunderstandings and pitfalls before you visit and allow you to simply enjoy Italy the way Italians do.

For example: A helpful tip on buying train tickets in Italy. You must buy and validate the ticket before boarding the train. This validation step is one many tourists overlook, sometimes resulting in a hefty fine.

Another train tip: stations in larger Italian cities sometimes have special express lines allowing passengers to buy tickets for trains departing within 15 minutes.

So, as you see these tips may not only save you embarrassment, but also time and money, both valuable vacation commodities.
