"The Innocents" is a 1961 horror film based on the novel "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. Directed and produced by Jack Clayton, it stars Deborah Kerr, Martin Stephens, Pamela Franklin, Michael Redgrave and Megs Jenkins.

PLOT
The Innocents tells the story of a 20 year old inexperienced governess (Kerr). In the film she is called Miss Giddens but is unnamed in the source novella. She is hired by a callous socialite (Redgrave) to care for his niece and nephew in his country mansion, Bly House. He will continue to reside in London and stipulates that the whole responsibility for looking after the children is with her alone.

The gothic Bly House proves to have many dark secrets: the governess discovers that her predecessor, Miss Jessel, was having an affair with the valet Quint (Peter Wyngarde), and that each of them had died in bizarre circumstances. Thereafter, the governess starts seeing their apparitions in the house and grounds and comes to believe that the ghosts of Quint and his lover are attempting to possess the bodies of the children. The children and the housekeeper deny seeing the apparitions, but she is particularly suspicious of the boy Miles, who has been expelled from school.

  • Usually when they do remakes, it sucks. They try and get an ensemble cast so they can get a lot of revenue. If they ever do try and remake, they better have someone who knows how to create a creepy atmosphere and with good actors.

  • @KTBEverlasting I hope they won't do a remake, but if they do I think Alejandro Amenabar could be the right choice. He did a great job with The Others, a movie that has a lot in common with The Innocents. Charlotte Gainsbourgh could be a great Miss Giddens, but it wouldn't be easy to find another Martin Stephens to play Miles. He was the scariest child in movie history!

  • I have an original drawing by the righter of this film William Archibald called bearded lady that he drew in 1954 hanging in my living room and now after seeing this it is starting to creep me out looking at it lol

  • @kyolym that's interesting! I didn't know W. Archibald was also a painter. Where did you get such a rarity?

  • @MayasMoviebox I obtained it at a consignment auction in New York of items being sold by some upity New Yorkers. I believe the person that owned it might have been related to or a friend of the people it was inscribed to - Ruth and Zach it is really an odd looking drawing kinda morbid showing a ladys head in a tree like a bird nest with a bird leaves and flowers around the face. He had one hell of an imagination. If you send me an email to - bagins7719@aol.com I will send u a picture of it

  • @kyolym Thanks, that's so kind of you! I'm sending you my email right now :)

  • I agree that this is scary all the way through but the most powerful scene for me is at 8.00 with Miss Jessel across the lake. Flora's screams are a treat.

  • When he grabs her and will not let go, is just frightening... And both kisses scared the life out of me!

  • wow are all the scery movies in black and white ahh classics

  • Deborah is so classy and graceful, just excellent

  • scared the shit out of me, an excellent film.

  • @MayasMoviebox I love the Others, that's one of my favorite horror movies. I don't really have anyone in mind for a cast. There probably is a Miles out there, but Stephens was definitely one of a kind.

  • Deborah Kerr's ability to emote her fear is half of what makes this movie so terrifying

  • they need to do remakes like these horror movies these days suck its mainly just blood and guts

  • Why do I feel so stupid and annoying for asking this? Can someone tell me how the two people die and how it ends?

  • @beckypopsicle I've typed it up and sent it to you :)

  • @QueenOfTheAubergines that would be great :)

  • @beckypopsicle Well it was with my drama group, and the teacher had a book of LAMDA monologues- I don't really remember much else. I can type it up for you and send it to you if you like. The monologue I did was from the play though, not the film.

  • @QueenOfTheAubergines where did you get it from? i've looked everywhere for one to do for a competition but i can't find it :)

  • Okay, I must say that that little girl is the most overreacted little girl i've ever seen behave. Lol

  • that ghost of Quint has a very sensous face
