The St. Thomas More Newman Center is announcing the opening of its newest initiative in the fight against hunger -- the Mustard Seed Café. During each home Ohio State football game this fall, volunteers and staff from the Newman Center will be selling hot dogs, brats, chips, and drinks to raise money to support the Newman Center's Food for the Homeless ministries, which currently provide more than 500 meals each month to those in need.
The Mustard Seed Café is a fun way for this campus ministry to use some of the positive game day energy and excitement to help those in desperate need. Homelessness and poverty are important issues in Columbus, especially in our university neighborhood, so we're looking for innovative ways to boost funding to these programs. It is estimated that there are 1,400 homeless individuals living in Columbus, with about 40 percent of these being families with children.
The Mustard Seed Café is a reference to Matthew 13:32, which says that when nurtured, the mustard seed -- the smallest of all the seeds -- prospers into a large tree. That's essentially what we hope to do here on game day - plant a small seed that can grow and flourish to help others.
