Inspired by the Sung Dynasty 宋朝 poem of the same title, the work is a pianistic expression of the mood and atmosphere as painted by the poem, namely, the grandeur of Chinese landscape and with it the reminiscence of past heroic events.
The music begins with a simple but effective depiction of the ancient battle site of Red Cliff 赤壁, silent and mysterious, suggestive of the faint sound of distant bugles. This is then followed by various scenes in the poem. The music ends in a contemplative mood, conveying a feeling of helplessness of human beings when faced with the giant and unswerving steps of history.
亂石崩雲,驚濤裂岸,捲起千堆雪;
(Piano)
