The Right Brain Initiative

The Right Brain Initiative, serving the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region, seeks to achieve a measurable impact on learning by integrating the community's arts and cultural resources into the education of every K-8 student in the region's school districts. This collaboration among artists, educators, parents, business leaders, elected officials and philanthropists is working to develop a systemic and sustainable solution for providing arts learning opportunities for ALL children.

Partners in this first implementation year include 20 elementary schools across four school districts (Gresham-Barlow, Hillsboro, North Clackamas and Portland) and 20 individual artists and arts organizations offering dance, music, theatre, creative writing and visual and media arts. The program expects to increase the number of participating schools and artists each year with a goal of reaching all tri-county K-8 schools in six years.

The Right Brain Initiative is a program of the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), a 501(c)(3) arts service organization serving Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington Counties. A governing committee of individuals who represent key stakeholders has primary responsibility for program oversight.

You're so right! It's been done in our schools- cuts and the first to go were the arts.

Second the vocational programs.

And I feel how this has been affecting the students! it's a tragedy. All you mentioned is right - motivation, creativity, innovation- all went down the drain. The students won't lift a finger to even decorate their classrooms - "Do we get bonus points for it?" Points are all they care about, competitiveness (only for the more-able students) rules. the rest - indifferent
