I believe he said something to the effect of "inside every cynic is a disappointed idealist" and I think there is a lot of truth I that. He does say here that he is not a cynic but I think his view was developed over time. He started out as an idealist but when he saw how bad things were he became a cynic. Then when he realized we might not be able to fix everything he just became an apathetic pessimist.
