@MrChirpsky: That might be one reason. But here's another: It's almost impossible to play. Awkward double-stops throughout, juxtaposed in the most awkward way.

Perhaps the reason this piece isn't played much is all the closeness or unison of the parts. Most quartets want to pieces that engage them in a dialog (e.g., Carter's quartets).
