Philip Glass (*1937) is probably the most famous composer of minimal music and one of my favourite artists. I also love his "Koyaanisqatsi" soundtrack.
There are several piano videos of this piece from the film "The Hours" on YouTube yet, but all of them show the easier version from the official sheet music. The arrangement I play here is (almost) the more complex one featured on the piano edition of the soundtrack. (The only slight difference is that I leave out the third quarter note in every bar played by the thumb of the right hand.)

  • This music, is absolutely horrific...honestly, I'm still trying to figure out which is worse, Impressionist or this. Truly, you can find a better composition, in which to show your musical abilities...by the way, you do have a wonderful touch, deep into the keys, beautiful sound and excellent control of pedal, so, don't think I'm mocking your playing, far from it...I just would like to listen to you play something that's actually worth listening to.

  • @ilovewiki Hehe, nice comment. But I think it's just the other way around. My playing skill may be fine, but really much worse than you described it. I love Minimal Music, of course it's not as sophisticated or complex as other pieces, but I think it's a very strong an haunting style and I also disagree on the point that it wasn't suitable to show your musical abilities. These pieces can be interpreted just as much as more complex ones, I think.

  • well i have the sheet music of this song and all the songs of the hours!

  • @TheLarres Yeah, but it includes a different arrangement of this song.

  • i would absoletly die if you could play "dead things" with the camera just like that! i'll even pay you if you want. "dead things" is my absolute favorite piano song but i can't read notes but i would love love love to know how to play it.

  • @DatSkinnyWhiteGirl Sure! The whole soundtrack is great, so it will be my pleasure to make you that favour. And no payment needed of course ;-) It'll take a while, but I'll try to learn the piece and send you the link when I've got a video of it uploaded.

  • Can you send me a link of that aswell?

  • Seriously someone has to have the sheet music for this. The fact that the arrangement available commercially is not nearly as interesting is a constant source of frustration for me.

  • Nothing happens on this music. No theme. I can do hundreds of this by day just improvising...

  • i warm up to this song

Furthermore, he says Schubert is his favourite composer...haha,...wow, what a slap in the face to Schubert. =) Well, nothing against your playing, your taste in music is questionable, but that's just a matter of preference. It isn't much worse than I described, trust me. Maybe, one day, I will appreciate this kind of music for it's merit...if it has any. *shrugs* who knows...

In terms of musicality, I'm spot on...I've been playing for many years and notice these types of things. Of course, from a technical standpoint, I can have no real say...as this piece doesn't show your abilities in that regard. I tend to find Minimalist music, rather boring, to be honest...Glass' harmonics are rather bland, and it really is amazing, that he was actually taught in classical Harmony, because by listening to his work, you wouldn't know it.

  • Wonderful, just wonderful

  • It seems to be a perfect arrengement. You have created that special atmosphere, it's really a good job!
