Actually thousens did survie the battle, the legions sendt to sicily were survivors of the battle.
After the battle Hannibal got most of south italy over to his side, even an alliance with Macedon and Syracuse, Capua the second greatest city in italy would aid him. he now had the resources and manpower to take Rome, but he hesitated and pondered upon it too long, and the moment was lost, Rome regrouped, Rome looked back on Hannibal's indecision as what saved Rome from certain defeat.

@1999521 Now Varro, who was in charge at the battle of Cannae, he was a bad general, it's like he lernt nothing from Rome's previous defeats, standard roman tactics to rely on infantry to break the enemy, while cav holdes the flanks, well hannibals cav were superior and in greater number, so why didnt Varro support his cav with infantry ???, the legions had punched through hannibal's center before without the numbers or depth Varro deployed, all he needed to do was extend the line.
-
@1999521 - Darius punched through Alexanders center with cav, he almost broke Alexanders left, he just couldent see Alexanders second line, which had never been used before in warfare, they were masked by the pikes/sarissa's of the phalanx and the cavalry. Even with the second line, Alexanders left were crumbling under the weight of the persians, it was just a matter of time. Just because Darius was beaten by a military genius does not make him a bad general.

@1999521 Darius was no genius, but if you look at the tactics of Issus and gaugamela, wether they were by him or his generals, they were good!. Issus he held superior ground, deployed hoplites vs the phalanx which almost did beat the phalanx in the river, he had a flanking force on high ground on Alexanders right flank, and he massed cavalry on his right to deliver the hammer. Gaugamela: Immortals and hoplites would hold the center while huge forces of cav envelopes Alexander -

@mo7217 The quality of the persian army was not terrible, if you read accounts of the battle of plataea, the persians fought bravely, the infantry just didnt have the right equipment to deal with hoplites, the real cream of the persian army was it's cavalry, and at Gaugamela they fielded 34.000!!! of them, Alexander met the enemy on their chosen ground, wich was perfect for a massive army, it was madness, and even tho he was outnumbered 5 to 1 he won, Hannibal did not or could not have done it.

Instead of the goofy music, you should've just used the battle sounds.

@dafansler Masinissa of Numidia betrayed Hannibal, that's why he lost at Zama.

Mo they lose because it's their LAST engagement
Ya it wasnt Hannibal's fault it was Carthage's fault. They would not support him even after the battle of Cannae, and even though Hannibal came back to Africa to aid Carthage when the Romans came, Carthage still didn't fully support Hannibal... Now, had they waiten till the Romans were near the city of Carthage, and given Hannibal all of its soldiers, then Hannibal might have pulled through and if he had lost they would be close enough to Carthage to retreat back inside and defend inside the wal
