This MAY be 3-4 Life, an "alternate reality" . Conway rejected it as patterns tended to become space-fillers. THIS simple 6-bit pattern generated a churning agar, a spacefiller

There may be cyclic activity in the core, but there seems to be no 3-4 Life program, I can't check it.

Conway's game got me into computers 25yrs ago, I still think it's facinating.
Just in case you're still looking. A good test case for your code is "Gosper's Gun", there's a WP page describing it and a diagram of the start position. IIRC it uses the original rules which are listed on the WP page "Conway's game of life".

These are modified rules, definitely.

I am 99.9% sure that you messed up the rules/math/logic at some point. I had to look at and change the way mine were set up at least 5 times before it was correct.
It looks like modified rules.

Never changed anything. But after some time I started to think about the program being bugged. Got the same result with an other pattern.
