New case of repressions against Bulgarians in Macedonia

Spaska Mitrova, 23, a native of Gevgelija in Eastern Macedonia, who holds Bulgarian citizenship, was sentenced to 3 months in jail even though she recently had a baby, because she did not allow her former husband to stay at her parents' home in order to visit their child after the divorce. The reasons why Mitrova requested a divorce had to do with her former husband constantly abusing her physically, and insulting her because of her national identity. A 32 000 Euro fine was imposed on her and her child was taken away despite the fact that it is still a suckling.

The young Bulgarian is also a member of the Radko Association - a political organization of citizens of the Republic of Macedonia with a Bulgarian national consciousness. According to her family and other members of the organisation she was arrested due to her pro Bulgarian activity.

Mitrova has a degree from the Southwest University in Bulgaria's Blagoevgrad but was fired from her job in a Macedonian high school with the explanation that Macedonia did not recognize Bulgarian university diplomas.
