An adhesion test is done to determine substrate compatibility. Embed a strip of polyester fabric into the roof coating and allow to cure completely. Pull the free end at a 90 degree angle. In this example, the black bonding primer improved the adhesion of the silver tinted elastomeric roof coating.

  • To get a true adhesion test result you should be pulling back at a 180 degree angle (straight back), not at a 90 degree.

  • @brirob29 A 90 degree pull is better since you are testing for adhesion and not shear.

  • The strip at the middle is the one that sticks to the membrane the best. I notice though that the membrane did not adhere to the substrate. Is it supposed to be like that? I thought that the membrane should also stick to the substrate.

  • It is an aged PVC roof. It is well adhered to the roof so I think that is limited to the test area you see in the video. It has been 2 years since we did the video.

  • I want to change the color of my roof. Would I do that with a roof coating or paint?
