1522 Galloping Through Texas (DVD video)

BNSF's 2001 Employee Appreciation Special

Follow steam locomotive Frisco 1522 on an historic journey through Texas as she pulls Burlington Northern Santa Fe's Employee Appreciation Special. Starting in Ft. Worth, the train headed south through Temple and on to Houston and Silsbee—a whole new territory for this powerful 4-8-2 Mountain-type locomotive. The 1522 got a good workout, producing intense bursts of stack talk while lugging 16 gleaming passenger cars through the Texas Hills. She performed flawlessly, highballing over former Santa Fe track at incredible speeds.

You'll follow the 1522 on her travels for a total of 8 days, spotting railroad icons such as Tower 55, Tower 17, T&NO Junction, and more. On the run out to Silsbee and back the Special traversed the former Southern Pacific Sunset Route between Houston and Beaumont. The train passed small towns and rolled through beautiful, rural landscapes. Crossing rivers, stomping up hills, and sprinting across the countryside, the locomotive was a sight to behold. Join us trackside for a fantastic show of steam railroading as the 1522 conquers the Lone Star State!

  • I wonder when is she going to run again! I can't wait!

  • When will it be back in Texas? I remember standing at the tracks waiting for her in 2001...would LOVE to see her again.

  • If it weren't for BNSF there would be no steam on Class One railroads in this country today. I really wish UP, CSX, and NS would get their panties unbunched....

  • 1522 is great while in action.

  • Whew! What a great shot at 1:27. ...her whistle is almost ghostly. I find it a challenge to NOT think of them as living creatures mourning their fallen comrades and trying their damnedest to show this generation they're worth more than the price of scrap metal.

  • It's a Hancock 3 chime whistle, listen to the one on WMSR #734, very similar.

  • I was out at a familly members house outside of krum TX when they turned this at Metro Jct and saw the smoke plume a few miles away and heard this sharp stacktalk needless to say I jumped in my truck and raced over to the main and chased it to Ft Worth hell we did no less than 70mph the whole time raceing through those small Tx farm towns it gave me one hell of a chase that day

  • I think that's the whistle off of GCRY 4960.

  • Isn't that whistle off of CB&Q 4960?
