Its because R and S have to do with the molecular structure of the chiral centre. Before they knew about chiral centers, they knew that enantiomers rotated polarized light in opposite directions. If the light was rotated to the left, it was "levo" and if the light was rotated to the right it was the "dextro" enantiomer. L/D and R/S do not have any correlation to each other, they are just different ways to describe the isomers! And the birth defect drug was thalidomide.
