The Orix Buffaloes are hoping to pick up some blasts from one of their past.
After a camp-long tryout, 38-year-old slugger Tuffy Rhodes on Thursday got passing marks in the form of a contract, a one-year deal was reportedly worth 400,000 dollars plus incentives.
Rhodes is a four-time home run champion, including in 2001 when he tied Sadaharu Oh's single-season record of 55 and was named the Pacific League's MVP.
He spent eight seasons with the Kintetsu Buffaloes--who merged with the Orix BlueWave before the 2005 season.
Rhodes played with the Yomiuri Giants from 2004-05, but was released after a bad shoulder sidelined him in the second half of the season.
He tried out with the Cincinnati Reds last year, but the shoulder hindered his performance and he retired.
