Demo video for a new external keypad for FT-817(ND). This is a new FT-817 accessory that supports advanced controls over FT-817 options like power level, meter function, VOX. It also includes 16 frequency presets, to QRP calling frequencies. Electronic circuit is public and basic firmware is free.
The microcontroller firmware can be personalized to suit your needs, and different controls be added.
Pre-programmed chip are available. Perhaps a bag-of-parts will be offered too.
See the user's manual at http://www.paolocravero.tk for further details.
This video has been improvised. Please excuse the bad audio quality and long pauses.

@iBl0b Ferrite rings, or rods, help a lot with USB to serial adapter QRM getting into the 817. Wrap as many turns as you can of the connector cable around some ferrite and see if it improves. Small capacitors > 47 pF and < 1nF between each conductor in the cable and the shield might help too.
@ik1zyw This external keyboard is excellent, very clever. Congratulations.

Yes, I did all the hardware design and software development. Hardware is very simple, but software is all own work. A nice way to keep me busy at night for 3 months...

Paolo sei troppo forte hai avuto un colpo di genio quando hai inventato questa tastiera esterna.ho appena comprato questa piccola ricetrasmetente per il mio mobile il tuo keypad mi sembra un ottima soluzione/alternativo

@Adriano9966 Thank you Adrian for your visit and your words. The keypad has evolved since the video was filmed. For mobile use the external display (AKA "Frequency Reader") could be more practical, or the soon-to-be-released version which includes a tuning knob. Stay tuned for new video(s) :-)

Hi !
I connected an Arduino to my FT-817, but I have a lot of QRMs (with small internal antenna). QRM comes when I connect the ground between Arduino and 817. It's the same with a USB-to-TTL serial adapter on my computer. Do you have the same problem ?
My idea is to use optoisolators, which works great, but I need additional power supply or battery for the Arduino.
Did you find any solution, like capacitors on power supply from the Yaesu, or coil on the wires ?
Thanks !
Frederic

@iBl0b The keypad does not use Arduino, it uses a dedicated circuit built around an Atmel AVR processor. The keypad is self-powered from the 817, so there are no ground-loop problems. Moreover the keypad clock has been chosen to minimize interference into HAM bands.
The internal antenna is certainly picking up noise. Only if the noise is present without antenna then you should go step by step into isolating data/ground paths.
I do not own Arduino, I cannot try to reproduce your problem.

Non ne capisco l'utilità... la keyboard è più grande della radio...
Uso a casa?

Uso a casa? A casa, in auto, in portatile, dove se ne sente il bisogno. Se qualcuno vende prodotti inferiori a 80+ Euro, qualche utilizzatore ci sara'.
Cosa e' una "antenna seria"? Conosco dipoli, yagi, long wire, ..., non "serie". :-)
Ciao.
