Just thought I'd share some of the items I take in my pack in bear country Yukon is home to10,000 black bears and 7000 grizzlies so this is a vital item that everyone should have while trekking in bear country! It could save your life :o)
Search "Bella Twin" on Google. This bear, which was near 1800 lbs if I recall correctly, stood as a record for a long time and was taken where I live. The Grizzly was downed with a .22 in self defence. The moral of the story? You will never accomplish this in a milliion years so, don't even try. Bella was very lucky. ;)
Conversely, there was a Griz that managed to kill two rangers after they had both shot it, one with 7mm the other 30.06. They found the bear 200 yards away, dead as well.
If you want to see "bad bear behaviour" look at "Yellowstone Grizzly approaches tourist". If you find yourself on the end of that scenario, you should use everything you have in escalating order of lethatlity. I personally WILL carry a defender in when in known Griz area. It's and extra 5.5 lbs that brings me piece of mind for scenarios like this one. I live in Griz country and I know a guy who has been chewed on. Not for me if I can help it. Thier land though, respect them, they belong there.
@Woodoak5962 Most bears will move away if they can identify you as human. It's the ones that don't move off that become a problem. Most black bears can be intimidated quite easily with noise and posturing, I know this from experience. Mr. Griz on the other hand is a completely different animal. My experience with them is that they don't scare easily and the more options you have the better. Ggreen is quite right, if you shoot at it, better make sure the shot is a good, if not, it's your last.
@TheShlong86 That's what I'm sayin' :o) A rifle isn't real heavy but maybe too much for most hikers. Although sometimes we've walked fair distances when hunting in the past :o) I'm more concerned about hammocking/camping in the bush. Had a lot of close calls over the years with Grizzers running through my camp or chewing on my hammock...haha!
@TheShlong86 To be honest I'd have to see that to believe it :o) I've lived in Grizz country my entire life and never heard of that. It's like an old school friend once told me he shot and killed a moose with a .22...haha! Defenders are about 6lbs. But I know the spray works and the bear bangers also work as well. For us it's the best option :o)
@Ggreenvideos if i lived in canada and couldnt carry my handgun then i probably wouldnt carry a rifle its just to heavy for a hike then i would be getting a can of bear spray, they also make pepper spray loads for flare guns
@Ggreenvideos i read a story about a man who killed a 900 pound grizz 1 shot with a ruger super redhawk alaskan 454 Casull, bear spray works to no doubt and has saved lives but that can is as bulky as my .44 and i can fire a warning shot to scare or kill the bear if i have to
@TheShlong86 Besides we can't carry pitols in the bush. Just from home to the range and back. If I were to carry a gun it would be a big rifle or a defender. Now that at least will do some damage. Even then I know people who have lugged em' with 6 rounds and nothing!
@TheShlong86 A pistol does nothing on a big Grizzly except piss him off then he eats you for dinner...haha! Bear spray screws up all their senses causing them to get scared then they run. Pistols are no match whatsoever for big Mr. Grizz!!!
