Gangsters de Itaparica, BRAZIL

Throughout August, September, and October 2010, I was blessed with the opportunity to choreograph, teach, and collaborate with a young group of male street dancers- a crew known as the Gangsters. We rehearsed for 2 months and the project was performed at Bale Folkloriko's Teatro Miguel Santana in Salvador and at Instituto Sacatar in Itaparica. After our performance at Teatro Miguel Santana, the director of the critically acclaimed Bale Folkloriko expressed interest in having some of the young men train at the school in Salvador. Suffice it to say, this was a very profound experience for me. The Gangsters had no formal dance training and had never been exposed to concert dance. I am very grateful to Instituto Sacatar for this incredible journey. DANCE = POWER
