Back in December, William J. Kelly, a long-time conservative activist and now Republican candidate for Illinois comptroller turned around a sign in the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield approved by the Secretary of State and provided by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The sign evidenced hostile and hateful language towards religion and religious people. It said, "Let reason prevail, there is no god, no angels, no devils, no heaven, no hell. Religion is just myth and superstition and enslaves minds and hardens hearts." Kelly was detained by state capitol police and ejected from the building. The incident has given him legal standing to challenge the state's authority to host a sign in a state forum that is hostile to religion. Let us know whose side you are on!

  • briguy1971 is the biased reporter Jim Anderson's relative. Hilarious.

  • Ummmm does saying that Religion '...enslaves minds and hardens hearts." seem hostile and hateful to you? Gee, seems kind of tame what with religious extremists holding up signs saying "god hates fags,' and 'thank god for dead solders' on them.

    P.S. F**k Westboro Baptist Church!

  • Let's get this straight...in order to make your argument that the sign is not atheist hate speech against religious people, you have to equate religious people with Westboro's wackos? Thanks for making my case against atheist hate speech for me.

  • this is easy people...when a christian put a sign, sue the state,..when an atheist put a sign sue the state...after all..the supreme court declare atheism as a religion...all you need is a lawyer to do the job...by the constitution it i illegal for a christian or an atheist to put propaganda in public......

  • Awesome! Good for him -- if I was in Illinois, I would vote for him.

  • its not a hate speech its just fact

  • who has ever heard a sign speak. He must have been walking by and said to himself, 'Its a sign'! In what way was that hate speach in the same way that warnings on cigarrete packets, which, are a barage of vile abusive wordiness! Or maybe sneezing in a tube train is violent assault armed with a deadly tisue. When did the thought police turn into the holy swat team when did pc become policeing christ. We really are up shit creek if stating a difference of oppinion is hate speach!

  • What a scumbag. So what your saying is that you willing want to violate the constitution? 1st amendment.

  • So if I went to a nativity scene and turned one of the wise men around so that it looks like baby jesus was sniffing his butt wouldn't that be about the same thing. To alter a sign like that is pretty close to censorship and I would hate to think that someone gets elected that sort of thought control.

  • If the grounds allow a nativity scene, then it damn sure allows this sign. Free speech extends to all, even if you don't agree with them.
