$16.95 at http://curiouslylocalstores.com A 60-min. documentary about Gordon Manning, a New Hampshire lumberman who still saws lumber (to 1/10 in. tolerances!!) on an old 1890s Lane Co. circular-saw mill. Not many people still know the craft of running the old 19th century circular-saw mills, and Gordon is among the best of those. Gordons mill was built around 1890 by the Lane Co. of Vermont which, at the time, was one of the major sawmill manufacturers in the Northeast. The film begins as Gordon fells trees, hauls logs to his mill and saws them into boards. He talks about his life and the craft of sawing, and then tours a modern high-tech sawmill as well as the State of NH's Taylor Sawmill, a restored 1820s water-powered "up-and-down" mill in Derry NH.

  • Many thanks for the film. Is there any more ?

  • redportleft: Do you mean have I made any other movies related to sawmills? The answer is no. I've just released one on an Indian Powwow (not up on Youtube yet.)

If you mean is there any more than the 2 minute trailer here on Youtube...yes...the movie is 60 minutes long. You can order it online (google parrotcreek).

By the way, your new time-lapse movie of logs into lumber is very nice indeed!!

  • great video i would like to hear his life story

  • A dying breed

  • AWESOME !

  • For future reference, the old "up and down" mill style is what was referred to as a sash saw. Lumber produced by such a mill is much sought after by those wishing to accurately reconstruct/restore old buildings.

  • Nice vid =)

  • Nice video. We had a Lane No. 1 Sawyers Favorite that I helped my father run when I was younger. Thanks!

  • Wow,I wish I could sit with that guy for a few hours to asks sawyer questions.

  • his wife me sunday school I think

  • Many thanks for the reply. I just bought the video from your web site. Thanks for the feedback on my vid. I could do with a portable recorder that would run all day. Then I could make my own films about the things I get up to. :-). Thanks again.
