  • @fourtrains The Kamov Ka-26 has two M14-V26 radial piston engines!!! It should sound like piston engines. :)

  • It's obvious there's no need for a tail rotor with counter-rotating twin rotors. Question is, how is yaw controlled? An educated guess would tell me that the rudder pedals imply differentiation on the collective between the 2 rotors. Less collective on 1 and more on the other would impose more load on 1 than the other resulting in torque reaction causing yaw. Can anyone concur on this?

  • What is the endurance ? I fly bell 206's and a full take gives about 2hours and 40 min flying time with a 20 min reserve. The Russians sure have a way with rotorcraft.

  • @kibabiba Well sir you are correct about helicopters with contra rotating blades being faster, they take away the negative effects of retreating blade stall; and your right, piston engines use far less fuel than turbines do. However, the power to weight ration of a turbine vs. a piston engine makes the turbine like 400% more efficient (that's probably an understatement). Go take your "obvious facts" and tell them to someone that doesn't know any better.

    Helicopters with coaxial rotors are more powerful and faster, it's obvious fact.

    Piston engine consumes less fuel than turbine engine

  • @skyferret1 BTW, if you do want to pick up your own vodka burner, I'm willing to bet there's tons of old SU 25s laying around (unless you're strictly a die-hard rotor-head). From what I understand, they're built tough so any bad landing is a good one.

  • @ReflectedImpedance That's actually a good point. I never thought about that. Yeah, single rotors have speed limitations because of advancing and retreating blades. Now I'm going to sit here and think about this for a while. LOL. My first thought about the physics behind twin rotors in forward flight is how the downward wash from the top rotor affects the lower rotor's advancing and retreating blades. Maybe this is why the 2 rotors seem so far apart as compared to TU 95 propellers.
