Taken from the movie "Black Snake Moan".

Son House was very opinionated when it came to what he deemed to be real blues. He was quite critical of young blues players taking their "Jump" music and adding the blues on the title. His Blues was the REAL Blues, raw and from the heart, there's not a fancy backing band that accompanies Son House in most of his songs, just him, his guitar and a whole lot of grief.

This is a short interview of him speaking about what the blues REALLY means to him. It was recorded after his re-discovery in the 1960s when he was an older man. I'd love to see the whole of this interview, I've only seen bits and pieces of it in differant Documentories and films, never the whole thing or the small concert that he would have played. If anyone has any idea where this comes from, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could tell me, and maybe give me an idea how to get a hold of it. I'm always looking for more interview footage of the old blues men, especially Mr. House.

  • Son House was opinionated because, probably more than any other man, he EMBODIED the blues.

Looks, voice, and that legendary guitar attack style.

Hell, he even shot a man in self defense, spent time in prison, was a preacher, then disappeared for over twenty years mainly out of fear because his friends Charley Patton and Robert Johnson suddenly died.

His is a story that is nearly impossible to believe if it weren't so well documented.

There is something so mystical about his raw brand of music.

  • Man, I so agree with Son on this. Ain't much can give you the blues like your women dogging you around. Son was the embodiment of the blues, period.
