I knew the first time Hill fought someone any good outside of Bismarck he would have problems. Hill was a protected fighter. He had multiple standing offers to fight Michael Moorer and Prince Charles Williams and turned them down because he wanted to the fights in Bismarck.

Freddie made some sense there, he said Hearns would start slow & figure out Hill & that is what he did. This was Hearns last great win. Hill's biggest loss. Just as Hearns fell short in the two biggest fights of his career. So did Hill. However, Hill was far past his prime when fought RJJ. Hill wasn't doing bad in that fight. Roy said something interesting, he said he does his chin checkin, if the guy has a good chin then he tries the body. Glenn Wolfe career was ended by a RJJ bodyshot.

@matchewboxer Virgil Hill looked great in the 1st couple of rounds of this fight. His left jab was faster than Hearns, but Hearns started timing Hill. I was in shock to see Hearns win this fight. I was 18 and ordered the fight and I remember, Ray Leonard saying that Hearns was making a mistake taking on an undefeated, very skilled boxer in Hill. Hill was a very skilled boxer and great hand speed, left jab/hook great legs - foot movement and balance. Hearns though, has never been out boxed.

@mag6333 Long ago comment but thanks for the information. Very surprising that Hearns trained out of Venice. He's so often associated with Kronk that it's an interesting and somewhat incongruous for Hearns to be associated with a place like Venice Beach. I like Venice, don''t get me wrong--it's a fun place--but it's a trip to think of Hearns hanging out at Muscle Beach.

This was so awesome watching this live as it happened. As focused as Hearns was here, I think he could have beat anyone in the division at that time on that night. Lets go old school and call him THE MOTOR CITY COBRA!
I think the gym Hearns trained at for this fight was Quake City Gym in Venice, California. He had 3 fights fighting out of that gym -Kemper Morton (Inglewood, California), Ken Atkins (Hawaii), and Virgil Hill (Vegas)-all 1991 fights. I am not sure if the colors are the Quake City Gym colors or if Tommy just wanted to have a unique color all his own since he was independent from Kronk and Emanual Steward at the time. Alex Sherer and Tommy's brother Billy were his main cornermen for this fight.
