Ian Rush, Liverpool goal scoring legend, is likely to remember this game, as he made a hattrick, had his penalty saved by Jens Martin Knudsen and equalled the Welsh all-time scoring record of 23 goals, which he later would pass and finish his international career at 28 goals, still a record for a Welsh player.

Sadly for Wales, their good qualifying campaign for USA94 and a real bid for only their second ever participation in a major tournament would end in disappointment in the last home game against Rumania.

As for the Faroes, it was their most unsuccessful qualifying tournament, in which they lost heavily all their games but those against Cyprus, got no points and scored only one goal in ten matches.

  • Wales qualified fair and square for World Cup 1958

Aside from the main European zone matches, Wales, which finished second in its group behind Czechoslovakia, was drawn into a play-off with Israel after Israel won its group by default because its three opponents, Turkey, Indonesia and Sudan, refused to play. FIFA had imposed a rule that no team would qualify without playing at least one match, something that had happened in several previous World Cups. Wales won the play-off and qualified.

  • @Blofeld67 It can be discussed - Wales did finish only second in their qualifying group, behind winners and eventual qualifiers Czechoslovakia. They were lucky to win that draw among several other European groups' runners-up (including Italy) for playing two play offs against very weak Israeli team, which of course they won - but so did almost any other European nation, should they play Israel these days. Still, with Jack Kelsey, John Charles and Ivor Allchurch, Wales were a decent side.

  • People forget that Wales is a small country with a population of about 3 million people, while England has about 56 million people. Hence, the Welsh Football Associaton has a smaller stock of players to chose from than the English FA, which, comparatively, has a wealth of players to select from. However, somewhat ironically, England are still shite and very over-rated, as the recent World Cup emphatically proved.

  • @Blofeld67 Well Uruguay has about 3 million people as well but still they are among the most winning nations in football's history, with many more titles than for example England (which by the way has less than 52 million people, still a lot). Wales has only participated in a major tournament once and even then (in 1958) they didn't really qualify!

  • @ Actually Uruguay has a population of 3.5 million people. It's true Uruguay are a great footballing nation and they did well in the recent World Cup (I was rooting for them as I like underdogs!). However, I wasn't saying that a small population is the only reason for Wales's lack of international football success. Wales's national sport is rugby. Wales have won the coveted "Grand Slam" twice in 3 years in the 6 Nations Championship, and also won it countless times in the 1960s and 1970s.

  • @Blofeld67 Everybody knows that Wales is a great rugby nation. But you can not use it as excuse for poor football results. Take Uruguay, again - in their country, football is sport N1, 2, 3 and 10, then, as N18, comes rugby. Not many people around the world are interested in rugby, comparing to football. BTW, Slovenia with only 2 million people has participated in three major tournaments in the last ten years.

  • @Blofeld67 Slovenia is great in winter-sports ( cross-country, Nordic-combined, alpine skiing, ski-jumping ) and are great in track and field athletics ( mostly in power sports ). And I thought this was comparing Wales to Slovenia, so swimming and athletics doesn't count for Wales either, right ? Bottom line is it's stupid to discuss which country is better, but you don't have to have millions of people in country to do something good.

  • @Farerets Half of everything is luck; the other half: fate.

  • Do Slovenia have a great rugby team, excellent snooker players, adroit golfers, superb athletes and excellent swimmers????????????????????????????

  • that barry horne guy is the manager for the kings school team, we played them in a final last week :)

  • It certainly doesn't help that for a small country, such a large chunk of our youngsters are lost to egg-chasing.

  • Hence, what Wales lack in terms of international football success, they more than make up for in international rugby success.
