Kudos to UP for their Steam Heritage Program. I only wish CSX and NS would do the same. But since the young turks took over for Hayes Watkins and the Claytor Bros, they have no interest in doing them now.

Big Locomotive for a Big Country and huge consists. You have just got to say 'Magnificent!' And what an achievement to have a Challenger still rolling... Thanks

What a sweet locomotive this is! I love steam engines, maybe because my father had a train layout, or old movies, but they bring tears to my eyes. Is that crazy?
Just saw the 844 and Centennial go by this AM at Brighton, CO. WOW!

That must've been a pain in the ass to keep that thing stoked with coal. No wonder they switched to oil.

@trainboy94 Her builder's photo shows white tires, and I want to say she had them at some point during the excursion career but I think most steam engines look better without them.

This is what they should be teaching kids in tech classes at school rather then a buzz box project. They should lern how to biuld a steam engine and get the roots of the modern day engine

Looks like heavy rails on this route, too. Looks like this route sees heaps of freight:-)))))

Back when it used to burn coal. After a few brush fires 3985 converted to burn oil and it's been that way ever since

Thanks, just sayng though, if you look at pictures of 3985 from 1981 - 1982, she has white tires.
Do you have any footage of 844 (a.k.a. 8444)
