Smart objects aren't all that smart. And they aren't objects. What they are is envelopes. The kind that hold things. And keep them safe. So that everything you do protects the image from harm. This is Photoshop at its best.

America likes its lists, and here's another one. Imaging expert and award-winning author Deke McClelland presents his list of the top 40 features in Photoshop—beginning with #40 and working his way up to #1—one weekly video at a time. Some are tools, others are commands, still others are conceptual. All are invaluable. Learn these 40 features and you'll know Photoshop.

  • Outstanding tutorial!

  • @sourchocolatejuice3 awesome! thanks so much for the info :)

  • @rocthemic1111111111

That explains why the window doesn't open for you; you have to place a raw file as the smart object - it can't be a jpg.

  • @sourchocolatejuice3 nope, its a JPG

  • @rocthemic1111111111

    is it a RAW file...?

  • that window you pulled up at 6:14, how did you get that? when i double-click on my smart object, that doesn't come up. and i imported it using "Place" just as you showed in the beginning of the tutorial.

  • Hey bro how do I make a layer (which has a transparent background) be in front of the other layer which I want to apply to the background?

  • While I am dazzled by your knowledge of ps, perhaps more amazing to me is that you talk a blue streak ( no offence intended, quite the opposite ) so rapidly, and yet you never betray the least hint of stumbling over a word, even minutely. Never do you say "uh", Never are at a loss for a word of description, indeed you utter the perfect ones in such a friendly, amiable, and warm way (much like Dan Aykroyd as Beldar Conehead, or a computerized sales message, again, no offence) Amazing!!!!
