From my private collection of Harry James concert audio, Harry appears at the 1965 Monterrey Jazz Festival playing "The Jazz Connisseur. The band includes Corky Corcoran on tenor, Tony Scodwell and Tom Porrello on trumpets, Jack Perciful on piano, Red Kelly on bass and Buddy Rich on drums.

  • The sax section chorus was written for Willie Smith on lead alto. Joe Riggs tries his best!

  • There has been a rumor floating around for years that there was going to be a cd of the complete performance labeled "Harry James Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival." However, so far it has not surfaced.

  • Damn is this fast! I count it out at Q=290 or so. The sax section just about loses it halfway through their sectional solo! The original counts in at about 240, for comparison. I think the slower version works better, but I suspect that Buddy liked the faster tempo (and probably earned the undying hatred of the sax section in the process). This tempo really showcases his talents like no other. According to the BR discography, this has never been issued - nice find.

  • ... from Europa Jazz label... ;)
